Witness tried to pull 15-year-old Serene Tayari to safety
WASHINGTON, DC — A 15-year-old Arlington girl died Saturday night after police say she slipped from a ledge overlooking the Potomac River near the Francis Scott Key Bridge, where a witness desperately tried but was unable to pull her to safety.
The teenager has been identified as Serene Tayari of Arlington, Virginia.
According to a Metropolitan Police Department incident report cited by WUSA9, Serene had been sitting on a ledge overlooking the river when she slipped into the water.
The report said a witness attempted to pull the teenager to safety but was unable to do so.
Members of MPD’s Harbor Unit responded to the area and pulled Serene from the water near the 3300 block of Water Street NW at approximately 7:47 p.m.
She was transported to a hospital, where she died Saturday night.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy.
