Teens sentenced to life for shooting death of 12-year-old girl

Lake City, FL

Matthew Rice, 18, received a life sentence on Thursday for the murder of 12-year-old Mariah Smith. A jury convicted Rice of second-degree murder and two counts of attempted second-degree murder after a shooting that occurred in August.

The incident involved a dispute between Mariah’s brother and the suspects, during which Rice fired at least 25 rounds into her home. Last month, 17-year-old Jayden Burch also received a life sentence for his role in the shooting.

Prosecutors indicated Rice’s DNA was found on one of the firearms used. They claimed school officials made multiple attempts to address Rice’s behavior without success.

Burch was described as the ringleader by the prosecution. According to assistant state attorney Sean Crisafulli, Burch initiated the violent confrontation over an altercation with Mariah’s brother.

At his sentencing, Burch showed no remorse and allegedly bragged about the shooting on social media shortly after it occurred.

Witnesses indicated he communicated details of the shooting, which included a declaration of guilt sent via Instagram. Burch maintained his innocence during the court proceedings.

The Lake City police responded to the shooting just after 9 p.m. on August 24, 2023. They found Mariah suffering from a gunshot wound, and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators discovered numerous shell casings outside the home, linking Burch to the crime. The investigation revealed that he provided the weapons used in the attack.

Jatarious Rashad Fluellen, another suspect in the case, remains awaiting trial. He was arrested shortly after the incident, marking the beginning of a string of arrests related to the shooting.

Marina’s tragic death prompted community outrage and led to officials renaming the street where she was killed as Mariah Reginae Smith Forever 12 Memorial Street. Mariah’s mother expressed her hope that no family would have to face similar pain in the future.

Catherine Guziejka, a 45-year-old day care worker, has received a 10-year prison sentence for abusing multiple toddlers at Punkin’ Doodles Day Care. The abuse occurred over several months and was documented through security footage.

Guziejka pleaded guilty in September to charges of injury to a child with intent to cause bodily injury. The incidents took place between July and October when Guziejka was observed kicking children in the back and performing other abusive actions.

Smith County assistant district attorney Richard Vance stated Guziejka received the longest sentence permissible for her offense. Victim families expressed dissatisfaction with the severity of the sentence.

Investigations began on October 23 when an employee reported Guziejka after viewing surveillance footage. This review led to the discovery of 134 instances of Guziejka assaulting at least six 2-year-olds.

The court heard multiple reports of Guziejka kicking toddlers while they were seated and using other forms of aggression. Victims were seen being forcibly held down or dragged to changing tables.

Melanie Dawn Law, the former owner of the day care, confirmed to police that Guziejka had been abusing children since July. Guziejka was terminated from her position once the footage was revealed, and all pertinent videos were handed to investigators.

Sheriff Larry Smith remarked on the fortunate circumstance that no serious injuries occurred, noting only minor bruises were reported among victims.

Guziejka’s defense attorneys cited her low IQ in an attempt to explain her behavior. However, Vance highlighted that the children showed no clear reason for the ongoing abuse, raising concerns about their long-term mental health.

Florida man accused of killing two children and setting home on fire

Pensacola, FL – A man is facing serious charges after two children, ages 9 and 7, were found dead in a mobile home that he allegedly set ablaze. The suspect, John Henry Walston Jr., is accused of murdering the children inside his trailer at the Grand Oak Mobile Home Park.

Witnesses report that the children’s mother attempted to rescue them from the burning home. She sustained injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Walston, 27, allegedly assaulted one of the children before killing both. He reportedly fled the scene after igniting the trailer in the early hours on Friday.

The children have been identified as Vayden Orum and Rayden Smith. Their mother survived the incident with burn injuries.

Escambia County Sheriff Chip Simmons stated that the fire was not the cause of the children’s deaths and detailed the circumstances in a video shared on social media. He confirmed that Walston assaulted one child before murdering both.

Walston reportedly lived at the mobile home with his own family, which included two other children. Tyler Smith, the father of one victim, expressed his outrage towards Walston in a local news interview.

Walston faces multiple charges: two counts of premeditated murder, one count of sexual assault on a victim under 12, and one count of arson. He remains detained without bond, with his first court appearance scheduled for November 26.

The grandmother of the deceased children described the situation as a “bad dream,” recounting a conversation with another sibling who shared details about the traumatic event. She expressed disbelief upon hearing the news of their deaths.
