Retired veteran stunned by $50K Powerball win in Maryland

UPPER MARLBORO, MD — A retired military veteran who never skips a Powerball drawing is celebrating a $50,000 win after years of faithfully sticking to the same lottery routine.

The Prince George’s County resident said he plays only Powerball and purchases tickets for every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday drawing without fail.

That consistency finally paid off in a major way during the May 2 drawing.

The longtime player bought his winning ticket April 30 at Upper Marlboro Extra Fuel, located at 15009 Upper Marlboro Pike.

About a week later, the retiree used the Maryland Lottery app to scan his tickets and initially thought he had won $5,000.

Still unsure, he scanned the ticket again.

And then again.

After seeing a third congratulatory message, the Upper Marlboro man realized the prize was actually worth $50,000.

Lottery officials said the winning ticket captured a third-tier Powerball prize.

The winner said his biggest previous lottery win was a shared prize worth around $700 several years ago.

The timing of the payout arrived at the perfect moment, according to the retiree, who recently made a business investment close to the same amount as his winnings.

Despite the life-changing surprise, the loyal player said he has no plans to stop buying Powerball tickets and hopes an even bigger jackpot could still be ahead.
