Ocean Township, NJ – Security camera footage has captured the dramatic moment a section of the roof collapsed inside the BJ’s Wholesale Club in Ocean Township, sending debris crashing into the store during Monday’s powerful thunderstorms.
The collapse occurred at approximately 11:30 a.m. at the wholesale retailer located at 1904 Route 35 in Oakhurst, as torrential rain and flash flooding moved across Monmouth County.
The video shows a large portion of the ceiling suddenly giving way, with debris falling into what authorities said was primarily the store’s bakery section.
Rescue operation launched after collapse
Emergency responders, including members of the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office and specialized rescue teams, responded immediately to the scene following reports that people could be trapped beneath the debris.
Early reports indicated that as many as three people may have been trapped after the collapse, but everyone made it out safely, according to the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office.
Officials also responded to reports of a broken gas main, prompting crews to secure utilities before rescue operations could continue safely.
Authorities have not yet confirmed the final number of injuries or whether anyone remained trapped after the initial search.
Severe weather may have contributed
The roof collapse occurred as intense thunderstorms produced heavy rainfall across central New Jersey.
The National Weather Service had issued Flash Flood Warnings for portions of Monmouth and Ocean counties, warning that rainfall rates of up to 3 inches per hour could produce life-threatening flooding.
While officials have not determined the cause of the collapse, the incident occurred during one of the day’s heaviest periods of rainfall.
Investigators are expected to examine whether storm conditions played a role in the structural failure or what else may have contributed to the collapse.
Flooding complicates emergency response
Floodwaters along Route 35 created hazardous travel conditions as emergency crews worked at the scene.
Authorities urged motorists to avoid the area while firefighters, utility crews and rescue personnel secured the building, shut off utilities and cleared debris.
Emergency vehicles remained on scene for several hours as responders evaluated the structure and searched the affected portion of the building.
The condition of those involved has not yet been released.
The investigation into the roof collapse remains ongoing.
