October 27, 2025

SOMERVILLE, N.J. – Somerset County officials joined local artists and community members Thursday to unveil the county’s new Open Air / Open Space art exhibit at 20 Grove Street.

The event brought together dozens of artists whose work highlights the connection between creativity and the county’s open spaces.

The exhibit, which runs through December 31, features more than 40 pieces created in outdoor “Plein Air” style using diverse mediums.

Key Points

  • The Open Air / Open Space exhibit runs from October 17 through December 31 at 20 Grove Street in Somerville.
  • More than 30 New Jersey artists contributed over 40 pieces created in various art forms.
  • County officials emphasized the link between creative expression and Somerset County’s open space preservation goals.

County leaders celebrate art and environment

Deputy Director Melonie Marano and Commissioner Elizabeth Graner joined the Somerset County Park Commission, Cultural and Heritage Commission, and local dignitaries to honor the participating artists. The exhibit’s featured works include pieces made with pastel, collage, ink, watercolor, oil, gouache, acrylic, printmaking, and mixed media—each inspired by New Jersey’s outdoor landscapes.

Marano highlighted the county’s ongoing commitment to preserving open spaces and promoting outdoor recreation. “Every day, countless residents venture into our scenic parks, award-winning gardens, and amazing nature trails to escape the stress of life and work,” she said. “By protecting our open space, we can create more opportunities for residents to stay active, lead healthy lives, and express themselves through these creative art projects.”

Promoting community engagement through art

The exhibit, hosted on the first floor of the county administration building, is part of Somerset County’s broader effort to connect cultural initiatives with environmental stewardship. Organizers say the event not only celebrates artistic talent but also raises awareness of the county’s goal to preserve 24,000 acres of open space.

The Open Air / Open Space exhibit is open to the public during regular business hours, offering residents and visitors an opportunity to experience local art inspired by New Jersey’s natural beauty.
