Somerset county shows off electric vehicle fleet

SOMERVILLE, NJ – Somerset County officials recently joined the New Jersey Electric Vehicle Association (NJEVA) and the Somerville NJ Environmental Commission during National Drive Electric Week.

The annual, nationwide event aims to educate the public on the benefits of electric vehicles (EVs). Commissioner Deputy Director Doug Singleterry, along with Commissioners Sara Sooy, Melonie Marano, and Paul Drake, participated in the Electric Vehicle Car Show hosted at Somerville’s Street Fair.

The county showcased two of its electric vehicles at the fair: a new Ford Transit electric, one of three serving as Paratransit vehicles, and a 2019 Chevy Bolt from the county’s five-car fleet.

The vehicles displayed served as working examples of the county’s forward-looking policies on sustainable transit.

Somerset County has the distinction of being the first New Jersey County to integrate electric vehicles into its community transit system. The use of EVs in public transportation aligns with the county’s broader vision to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote cleaner air.
