South Carolina Mother Arrested for Killing Daughters, Animal Abuse

August 27, 2024

LADSON, S.C. — A South Carolina mother is in custody following disturbing allegations that involve the death of her 10-month-old daughter and the abuse of several animals. Sara Constance Shakeri-Taylor, 39, has been charged with one count of homicide by child abuse, three counts of conspiracy, three counts of animal fighting or baiting, and one count of ill treatment of animals, according to the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office.

The case began on May 15, 2024, when sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to Shakeri-Taylor’s residence on Hardwood Street in Ladson, a community located approximately 20 miles northwest of Charleston, after receiving a report of an unresponsive infant. Upon arrival, deputies found the 10-month-old girl, who was later determined to have died from a fentanyl overdose.

According to an affidavit, the child’s father, Sandy Gathers, 41, discovered the tragic scene when he returned home from work around 3 p.m. He found his daughter lying on her stomach at the foot of the bed, while Shakeri-Taylor was reportedly asleep.

Further investigation led to the additional charges of animal cruelty against Shakeri-Taylor. Authorities allege that she was involved in animal fighting or baiting and subjected animals to severe mistreatment.

Shakeri-Taylor is currently being held in custody as the investigation continues. The charges against her underscore a case that has shocked the local community, raising concerns about both child and animal welfare.
