Two masked suspects fled after an armed robbery turned violent, leaving a man wounded during a struggle outside a Newark grocery store, police said.
NEWARK, N.J. — A grocery store robbery turned violent when the store employee’s husband confronted two masked suspects and was shot during a struggle, according to the Newark Department of Public Safety.
Police said the robbery occurred at approximately 4:55 p.m. on Sept. 8, 2025, at a grocery store in the 200 block of Hawthorne Avenue.
According to investigators, two masked men entered the store, where one allegedly pointed a firearm at a customer while the other demanded money from the employee working behind the register.
After becoming dissatisfied with the amount of cash in the register, the suspects allegedly attempted to steal merchandise before leaving the store.
As they exited, the employee’s husband confronted the pair. During the confrontation, police said one of the suspects shot him. He was transported to University Hospital for treatment.

Authorities described one suspect as wearing black-and-gray sneakers, dark gray shorts, a silver shirt, a multicolored ski mask, a cross-body bag and a silver necklace with a pendant.
The second suspect was described as wearing white sneakers, khaki cargo pants, a white Nike zip-up jacket and a black ski mask.
Surveillance images of the suspects have been released as detectives ask for the public’s help identifying them.
