Teen arrested after brazen Northeast DC carjacking while victim loaded vehicle

WASHINGTON, DC — A teenager has been arrested after police say he jumped into a vehicle and drove away while the owner was still loading items into the car in Northeast Washington.

The unarmed carjacking happened Thursday, May 7, around 2:55 p.m. in the 1200 block of 5th Street Northeast, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

Investigators said the victim was loading belongings into the vehicle when the suspect suddenly entered the driver’s seat.

Police said the suspect then drove off in the stolen vehicle before officers arrived.

Later that same day, officers located the vehicle abandoned and unoccupied in the 1700 block of Bryant Street Northeast.

Following the investigation, authorities obtained a DC Superior Court custody order for the suspect.

On Friday, May 8, police arrested a 17-year-old boy from Northeast Washington in connection with the case.

The juvenile was charged with unarmed carjacking, according to MPD.

Police have not released additional information about the victim or whether more suspects may have been involved.
