Virginia Beach police dismantle $1.6 million multi-state retail theft ring

Multi-state retail theft ring tied to $1.6 million in losses dismantled after Virginia Beach investigation

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA — A sweeping investigation that began with a major electronics theft at a Virginia Beach Walmart has now led to the dismantling of an organized retail theft ring accused of stealing more than $1.6 million worth of merchandise across several states, police announced Wednesday.

The Virginia Beach Police Department said detectives worked alongside law enforcement agencies in Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina, as well as Walmart Global Investigations, to break apart the large-scale operation.

Authorities said the investigation started on January 17, 2024, after thieves targeted a Walmart in Virginia Beach and another in Norfolk less than 30 minutes later.

Investigators said suspects bypassed locked electronics cages and stole nearly $40,000 worth of Apple products and gaming consoles in a single morning.

Police said forensic evidence recovered at the scene, including fingerprints, helped identify 24-year-old Alexander Newman of Chesapeake.

Additional evidence later connected detectives to 35-year-old Tony McClease of Norfolk, who investigators identified as the alleged leader of the operation.

Authorities said the theft ring operated systematically across multiple jurisdictions dating back to December 2023, including thefts in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Yorktown, Henrico County and Roxboro, North Carolina.

The investigation intensified on January 26, 2024, when Hampton Police stopped a suspect vehicle occupied by McClease.

Inside the vehicle, investigators recovered stolen merchandise, a firearm and digital evidence that police say exposed a highly organized criminal enterprise.

Detectives ultimately identified four individuals allegedly involved in the theft network.

Police said McClease directed theft operations and oversaw distribution of stolen goods, even while incarcerated at times.

Investigators identified 45-year-old Chane’l Stith of Hampton as the alleged “fence” responsible for selling stolen items.

Authorities said 24-year-old Ariana Orkney of Hampton handled transportation, finances and communications tied to the operation.

Newman was identified as the alleged “booster” who physically carried out many of the thefts, according to investigators.

Following the investigation, McClease, Stith and Newman were indicted on charges including organized retail theft, grand larceny and conspiracy.

“This investigation proves that crossing city or state lines provides no protection from accountability,” Virginia Beach Police Chief Paul Neudigate said in a statement.

Authorities said the coordinated effort dismantled two connected criminal groups and resulted in arrests across multiple states.

The investigation remains active.
