The Steepest Steel Rollercoaster in the World is in New Jersey, But Not Where You Might Think

RUTHERFORD, NJ – The title for the world’s steepest steel roller coaster now belongs to the TMNT Shellraiser, a surprising find not at Six Flags Great Adventure but at the Nickelodeon Universe Theme Park.

The TMNT Shellraiser opened its doors to thrill-seekers on October 25, 2019. The roller coaster features a 141-foot vertical lift hill, culminating in a descent with a curve angled at a staggering 121.5 degrees. In the world of roller coasters, a 90-degree descent is considered a vertical drop, meaning the Shellraiser’s descent angle signifies a partial inversion.

The coaster is a modified version of its predecessor, Takabisha. Both are categorized as 1000-series Euro-Fighter roller coasters and were designed by Gerstlauer Amusement Rides, a German engineering firm.

The TMNT Shellraiser’s record-setting design adds a unique attraction to the Nickelodeon Universe Theme Park in Rutherford, distinguishing it from other amusement parks in the United States, including Six Flags.
