Toms River Recreation Expands Spring Lineup With Yoga, Fitness, Zumba and Chess Camps

TOMS RIVER, N.J. — Residents looking for outdoor fitness classes, family activities, and youth programs will find a packed spring and summer schedule through the Toms River Department of Recreation, with everything from beach yoga and Zumba to cupcake decorating and chess camps.

The township’s latest recreation lineup includes programs for adults, teens, and children at locations across Toms River, many priced between $35 and $45 for multi-week sessions.

Several programs begin later this month and continue through July.

Beach Yoga Returns to Shelter Cove

One of the most scenic offerings this season is Beach Yoga at Shelter Cove, hosted in partnership with Pure Toms River Yoga.

The sunrise yoga sessions begin Thursday, May 21, and continue through July 9 at Shelter Cove Bay Beach on Bay Avenue. Sunday sessions run from June 7 through July 26.

Classes start at 7:30 a.m. and cost $45 per eight-week series.

Participants are asked to bring a large beach blanket, while sunscreen and bug spray will be available if needed.

Organizers said all participants must complete liability waivers before their first session.

Indoor Yoga and Fitness Programs Planned

Toms River Recreation also launched a Summer Yoga Program at the township’s Youth Services Building on North Bay Avenue.

Monday classes run from May 18 through July 13 at 4:45 p.m., while Wednesday sessions run from May 20 through June 24 at noon.

Programs are open to ages 16 and older, with pricing ranging from $35 to $45 depending on the session length.

The township is also offering “Fitness Class with Pepper,” a Pound Rockout Workout program led by certified fitness instructor Lisa Pepper.

The Thursday evening classes run from May 21 through July 16 from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Youth Services facility.

Residents can register through the township’s Community Pass system.

Zumba Classes Offer Daytime and Evening Options

Dance fitness fans will have multiple options this spring with Zumba and Zumba Gold sessions led by instructor Anne.

Standard Zumba classes run Wednesdays from May 6 through June 24 between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Zumba Gold, designed for active older adults and beginners, takes place Fridays from May 8 through June 19 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Both classes are held at the Youth Services Building at 1505 North Bay Avenue.

Resident pricing is listed at $40.

Memorial Day Cupcake Decorating Class Scheduled

Families with younger children can also participate in a Memorial Day-themed “Chef It Up” event with Chef Sue on May 13 at 6 p.m.

The class teaches decorating techniques using fondant, pastry bags, and patriotic-themed cupcake designs.

Organizers said children will create four Memorial Day cupcakes during the session and receive snacks and drinks while attending.

The class costs $28 per child and takes place at the township’s Youth Services location.

Chess Wizards Camp Targets Young Players

Toms River Recreation is also partnering with Chess Wizards for a week-long summer chess camp running June 22 through June 26.

The camp welcomes players ranging from beginners to advanced skill levels and is open to students in kindergarten through eighth grade.

Programs include both instructional chess education and activity-based learning.

Camp sessions are available as full-day or half-day programs at the Youth Services Building.

Pricing is listed at $250 for half-day attendance and $360 for full-day enrollment.

Recreation Department Continues Community Programming Push

The expanded lineup reflects Toms River Recreation’s continued focus on affordable community programming for residents of all ages.

Many events are centered around wellness, outdoor activity, and family participation as warmer weather arrives along the Jersey Shore.
