Baltimore, MD – Severe thunderstorms capable of producing damaging winds and possible tornadoes are expected across Maryland and the Washington, D.C. region Monday as a strong cold front moves through the area.

The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center has placed much of central Maryland, including Baltimore and Washington, in a Moderate Risk (Level 4 of 5) for severe weather.

Key Points

• Moderate Risk for severe thunderstorms across parts of Maryland and the D.C. region

Strong storms expected later today

Tornado alert: severe storms and possible twisters threaten maryland and d. C. Region monday

Meteorologists say low clouds and scattered showers during the morning could give way to stronger thunderstorms as the day progresses.

As the clouds break and a powerful cold front approaches from the west, atmospheric conditions could support the development of severe storms.

The most intense storms could produce wind gusts between 70 and 80 mph, particularly within fast-moving squall lines.

Forecasters say a few tornadoes are also possible, especially with isolated storms or stronger segments of the line of storms.

Maryland State Police urge caution

Maryland State Police are urging residents to use caution when traveling later Monday as severe weather develops.

Officials are encouraging drivers to monitor conditions and check road updates through the state’s transportation website.

Heavy rain, strong winds, and lightning could create hazardous driving conditions across parts of the state.

Temperature swings with passing front

Showers and thunderstorms are expected through the afternoon and evening Monday, with some storms potentially becoming severe.

High temperatures will climb into the low 70s before the cold front moves through the region.

Behind the system, temperatures will drop sharply overnight with lows falling near the lower 30s and gusty west winds continuing into Tuesday.

Tornado safety reminders

The National Weather Service recommends moving to the lowest level of a building and sheltering in an interior room without windows if a tornado warning is issued.

Officials say basements offer the best protection when available, and residents should cover their head and neck to protect against flying debris.
