WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Donald Trump announced a sweeping directive Tuesday declaring that the United States will “lead the world in 6G development,” setting in motion a nationwide effort to secure technological dominance in next-generation wireless communications.
In a presidential memorandum titled Winning the 6G Race, Trump framed 6G networks as critical to America’s national security, economic growth, and leadership in emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, robotics, and implantable devices. The document outlines an aggressive federal strategy to identify and repurpose key spectrum frequencies for commercial use while protecting existing military and intelligence operations.
Under the directive, the Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Communications and Information is ordered to begin studies on the 7.125–7.4 GHz spectrum band to determine how federal systems can be relocated to adjacent frequencies without disrupting national security missions. A report on the findings, including costs and transition timelines, must be delivered to the President within 12 months.
The memorandum also directs the immediate identification of the 7.125–7.4 GHz band for reallocation to full-power commercial use and calls for studies of additional bands between 2.69–2.9 GHz and 4.4–4.94 GHz to assess their potential for 6G deployment.
On the international front, Trump instructed the Secretary of State to coordinate with federal agencies, industry leaders, and foreign partners to promote U.S. priorities in upcoming global telecommunications negotiations, particularly at the International Telecommunication Union’s World Radiocommunication Conference in 2027.
The memorandum emphasizes that these initiatives are to be implemented in compliance with existing law and budgetary limits but makes clear the administration’s intent: to position the United States as the uncontested leader in the race to build the world’s most advanced communications network.
