Two arrested in fatal i-70 shooting in maryland

FREDERICK, Md. — Maryland State Police have arrested two Howard County men in connection with a deadly shooting on Interstate 70 that left one man dead and two others injured earlier this month.

Francisco Javier Sanchez-Juarez, 28, and Jeffrey Josue Diaz, 24, were taken into custody on June 29 without incident in Howard County. Both men are charged with first-degree murder and multiple firearms offenses. They are currently being held without bond at the Frederick County Detention Center.

The shooting occurred just before midnight on June 14 along the eastbound lanes of I-70 near Maryland Route 27 in Mount Airy. Police responded to a 911 call and located a 2018 GMC Sierra pickup truck on the shoulder. The vehicle was occupied by six men at the time of the shooting.

Eduardo Alexander Alvarado Urrea, 20, of Silver Spring, was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other passengers in the truck were treated for gunshot wounds, while three additional occupants were unharmed.

The Maryland State Police Homicide Unit led the investigation, with support from multiple MSP divisions and barracks, along with local police in Frederick and Howard counties. The arrests followed an intensive multi-agency effort.
