Two Killed in Three-Vehicle Crash in New Castle, Delaware

August 22, 2024

NEW CASTLE, Del. — A three-vehicle collision on Christiana Road late Wednesday night resulted in the deaths of a 29-year-old woman and a 10-year-old girl, according to Delaware State Police. The crash, which occurred at approximately 11:20 p.m., also left four other children and two adults with injuries.

Authorities reported that the crash began when a 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan, stopped at a traffic light in the eastbound lanes of Christiana Road, attempted to turn left onto Airport Road. At the same time, a 2022 Kia K5 traveling at high speed in the westbound lanes failed to stop at a red light and entered the intersection, colliding with the Dodge.

The force of the collision caused the Dodge to spin and roll over, while the Kia deflected across a cement median, striking a 2020 Hyundai Tucson that was waiting to turn right onto Christiana Road westbound from Airport Road.

The driver of the Dodge and a 10-year-old passenger, both from New Castle, were pronounced dead at the scene. Their identities are being withheld pending notification of their families. Four other children in the Dodge sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital.

The driver of the Kia, a 26-year-old man from Wilmington, Delaware, and the driver of the Hyundai, a 43-year-old woman from Bear, Delaware, were also taken to area hospitals for serious injuries.

The roadway was closed for approximately six hours as police investigated the scene. The Delaware State Police are continuing their investigation into the crash.
