Two NJ Criminal Justice Detectives Suspended After Separate Drunk Driving Cases

Two detectives with New Jersey’s Division of Criminal Justice received lengthy suspensions after separate off-duty drunken driving incidents, according to the state’s 2025 Major Discipline Report.

Two detectives employed by the New Jersey Division of Criminal Justice were suspended for more than five months each after separate off-duty driving incidents that resulted in internal affairs investigations and discipline, according to the state’s newly released 2025 Major Discipline Report.

Detective Isaiah Murray received a 208-day suspension following a January 2025 motor vehicle crash in Moorestown, while Detective Hamid Sesay was suspended for 166 days after pleading guilty to driving under the influence stemming from an August 2024 incident in Ridgefield.

Neither detective was terminated, demoted, or separated from the agency, according to the report.

Detective crashed into residential property

According to the discipline report, Moorestown police responded on Jan. 5, 2025, to a motor vehicle crash where a vehicle with heavy front-end damage had come to rest in the side yard of a home after striking the property.

Investigators found Murray alone in the driver’s seat with the engine still running.

Murray was initially charged with driving under the influence, but the DUI charge was later dismissed in municipal court. He subsequently pleaded guilty to reckless driving and received a 45-day driver’s license suspension.

The internal affairs investigation concluded that Murray violated Division of Criminal Justice policies governing compliance with the law and conduct reflecting negatively on the agency, resulting in a 208-day suspension.

Detective pleaded guilty to DUI

The report states that Ridgefield police encountered Sesay on Aug. 17, 2024, after finding his vehicle stopped at a stop sign for an extended period with the brake lights activated.

According to the report, officers found Sesay asleep behind the wheel of the running vehicle. After removing his off-duty firearm, officers administered field sobriety tests, which the report states he failed.

During processing, the report says Sesay gave ambiguous responses when asked to submit breath samples, resulting in a refusal under New Jersey’s implied consent procedures.

Sesay later pleaded guilty to DUI and careless driving. His sentence included fines, court costs, and a mandatory three-month ignition interlock device.

The internal affairs investigation found that Sesay violated agency policies involving compliance with the law, conduct unbecoming, and carrying a firearm while off duty.
