ASBURY PARK, NJ – Two suspects have been charged for two separate shootings in Asbury Park from March of 2020, announced Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher J. Gramiccioni.
Malik Carey, 19, and a 17-year-old male, both of Neptune, have been charged with two counts of 1st-degree Conspiracy to Commit Murder, 2 counts of first degree Attempted Murder, 2 counts of 2nd-degree Possession of a Firearm for an Unlawful Purpose, and two counts of 2nd-degree Unlawful Possession of a Handgun, stemming from incidents in Asbury Park – on March 22, 2020, at the Lincoln Village public housing complex, and March 29, 2020, at a residence in the 1200 block of Monroe Avenue.
On March 22, 2020, at approximately 6:17 p.m. Asbury Park Police Department responded to a report of shots fired inside of one of the buildings located at Lincoln Village housing complex. Upon arrival, officers multiple bullet holes in the door of an apartment as well as other evidence that guns had been fired. No victims were injured in this shooting.
On March 29, 2020, at approximately 3:54 p.m., the Asbury Park Police Department responded to a 911 call for gunshots fired near the 1200 block of Monroe Avenue. Upon arrival, officers identified multiple bullet holes in the front of a residence as well as other evidence of a shooting. No one was injured as a result of this shooting.
A joint investigation by the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Department and the Asbury Park Police Department revealed that both shootings were related and that Carey and the 17-year-old male were responsible for both shootings.
Carey had his first appearance yesterday before he Honorable James M. Newman, P.J.M.C., and he remains detained in the Monmouth County Correctional Institution (MCCI) in Freehold Township on related charges stemming from a June 2020 shooting that took place in the area of the Asbury Park Village housing complex. The 17-year-old male was arrested last week and appeared in Family Court for a hearing on October 28, 2020, before the Honorable Richard W. English, J.S.C. The juvenile is scheduled for another court appearance on November 13, 2020.
