Virginia GOP blasts Governor Abigail Spanberger over first actions in office

RICHMOND, VA – The Republican Party of Virginia sharply criticized newly inaugurated Governor Abigail Spanberger, accusing her of breaking campaign promises and embracing what it called “radical” partisan policies.

In a statement posted to social media on Monday, the Virginia GOP claimed Spanberger had “promised to address affordability” but instead supported “new taxes and costly government mandates.” The party warned that her agenda could cost Virginia families “literally thousands of dollars more out of pocket every single year.”

Republicans also accused the Democratic governor of abandoning her pledge to work across party lines, pointing to Democratic-backed constitutional amendments that passed without GOP support.

“She promised to be bipartisan, but she’s working with her party to blow up Virginia’s fair maps to gerrymander our Commonwealth into a one-party state,” the post read.

The statement further attacked Spanberger’s early executive actions, including what Republicans described as “ending local police cooperation with federal authorities to arrest violent criminal illegal aliens.”

The Virginia GOP called on Democrats “to stop the bonanza of progressive tax-and-spend bills” and instead “work with Republicans to cut taxes, improve public safety, and encourage more investment and growth in our Commonwealth.”

Governor Spanberger, a former congresswoman from central Virginia, was sworn in earlier this month as the state’s 75th governor and the first Democrat to hold the office since Ralph Northam. Her office has not yet publicly responded to the GOP’s statement.
