Wayne, NJ – Fire crews from across Passaic County battled a two-alarm blaze Wednesday night after heavy smoke poured from a commercial building on Burgess Place.

Flames broke out around 8 p.m. at 34 Burgess Place, sending thick black smoke into the air and prompting a rapid response from multiple Wayne Fire Department companies.

Firefighters forced entry into the building with saws as smoke pushed from the roof, according to video footage captured at the scene.

Crews contain blaze after intense attack

Residents nearby reported seeing thick plumes of dark smoke rising over Route 23 and neighboring industrial lots. Firefighters remained on scene for several hours conducting overhaul operations and checking for hidden flames within the roof and walls.

Cause under investigation

Officials have not yet released information on the cause of the blaze or the extent of the damage. No injuries were reported among firefighters or civilians as of late Wednesday night. Investigators from the Wayne Fire Prevention Bureau and Passaic County Fire Marshal’s Office are expected to review the scene.
