Store confrontation escalates into robbery in Mattapan
Boston, MA – A suspected shoplifting attempt inside a Mattapan liquor store escalated into violence when a man allegedly struck a worker in the head before fleeing with a bottle of wine, prompting Boston police to release images of the suspect.
The incident occurred Friday at approximately 12:22 p.m. inside Budget Liquors at 69 River Street, according to the Boston Police Department.
Investigators said the suspect entered the store wearing a black sweatshirt and black shorts before taking a bottle of wine from a shelf and concealing it in his pocket.
As the suspect attempted to leave the business, a struggle broke out with the victim, during which the victim was struck in the head.
Police said the suspect then fled on foot down River Street toward Mattapan Square before officers arrived. A search of the surrounding area did not lead to an arrest.
Detectives assigned to District B-3 in Mattapan are continuing to investigate and are asking for the public’s help identifying the individual shown in surveillance images released by police.
