PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — A 26-year-old man faces firearms charges after a Philadelphia Highway Patrol officer was shot during a traffic stop Monday night in North Philadelphia, leaving the officer hospitalized with a gunshot wound to the leg.
Philadelphia police identified the suspect as Rashid Walker, who was taken into custody at the scene following the shooting in the 2400 block of North 17th Street. Authorities said Walker has been charged with Violations of the Uniform Firearms Act (VUFA).
The shooting happened at approximately 7:40 p.m. Monday as Highway Patrol officers conducted a vehicle stop in the neighborhood.
According to the Philadelphia Police Department, an officer was performing a safety frisk on Walker, who was riding as a passenger in the vehicle, when the officer felt a handgun inside Walker’s jacket pocket.
Police said the firearm discharged during the encounter, striking the officer in the upper right leg.
Officer Hospitalized After Gunfire
Fellow officers rushed the wounded officer to Temple University Hospital following the shooting. Authorities said the officer remains in stable condition.
