Philadelphia, PA – A 15-year-old boy who had been reported missing was killed late Monday night after being struck by a CSX freight train in Northeast Philadelphia, according to police.
Officers responded at approximately 11:30 p.m. to the 1500 block of Grant Avenue following reports of a train striking a pedestrian. The Philadelphia Police Department said the crash remains under investigation.
Conductor attempted emergency stop
According to the preliminary investigation, a CSX freight train operated by a 55-year-old conductor was traveling northbound at a normal operating speed under dark conditions with limited visibility when the conductor saw a pedestrian walking southbound on the railroad tracks.
Police said the conductor immediately initiated emergency braking but was unable to stop the train before striking the teen.
The Philadelphia Fire Department responded to the scene and pronounced the victim dead at 11:44 p.m.
Victim had been reported missing
Authorities identified the victim as 15-year-old Abdusalom Babaev of the 9300 block of Neil Road.
During the investigation, detectives determined Babaev had been entered into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database as a missing person on Sunday. Police said notification procedures were underway.
The Philadelphia Police Department’s Crash Investigation Division is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision.
