Pedestrian struck during turn dies from injuries
Stamford, CT — A woman crossing the street in a marked crosswalk was struck by a turning pickup truck and later died from her injuries, prompting an ongoing investigation by local authorities.
The crash occurred around 2:04 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of Strawberry Hill Avenue and Colonial Road. Police said a 2014 Toyota pickup truck, driven by a 50-year-old Stamford resident, was traveling southbound on Strawberry Hill Avenue before attempting a left turn onto Colonial Road.
At the same time, 66-year-old Evelyn Aponte of Stamford was crossing Colonial Road within the marked crosswalk when she was struck by the vehicle.
Aponte was transported to Stamford Hospital in critical condition and later died early Sunday morning.
The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with officers. Police issued an infraction for failure to grant the right of way to a pedestrian in a crosswalk. No additional charges have been filed at this time.
The Stamford Police Department’s Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Squad continues to investigate the incident in coordination with the Stamford State’s Attorney’s Office.
