SUFFOLK COUNTY, N.Y. — A Wyandanch man has been indicted on charges of attempted murder, assault, and other related offenses in connection with a shooting that took place outside Jake’s 58 Casino in Islandia earlier this year.
Nashawn Legros, 24, was arraigned on August 30 after being apprehended by U.S. Marshals and the Suffolk County Police Department’s Narcotics Section. The indictment stems from a May 31 incident in which Legros allegedly shot a man twice at close range in the casino’s parking lot, causing the victim serious physical injuries.
According to investigators, the shooting occurred around 10:16 p.m. Legros was seated in a parked vehicle when he observed the victim walking toward the casino entrance. He allegedly exited the vehicle, approached the victim, and shot him in the chest and stomach. The victim managed to enter the casino before collapsing and was given emergency care by staff and civilians before being transported to a hospital for surgery. The victim survived but sustained severe injuries.
After the shooting, Legros reportedly fled the scene and abandoned the vehicle, which he was not authorized to use, in the Central Islip area.
Legros was charged with one count of Attempted Murder in the Second Degree and one count of Assault in the First Degree, both Class B violent felonies, as well as two counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree, Class C violent felonies, and one count of Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle in the First Degree, a Class D felony.
Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney condemned the act, stating, “This defendant’s alleged crimes not only threatened the victim’s life, but also the lives of everyone else in the casino parking lot at the time. That is unacceptable.”
Legros is being held on $1 million cash bail, $2 million bond, or a $10 million partially secured bond. He is scheduled to appear in court again on September 6, 2024. He is being represented by the Legal Aid Society.
