BERKELEY TOWNSHIP, N.J. – An 11-year-old girl was killed Wednesday afternoon when an electric dirt bike carrying two children collided with a Ford F-250 pickup truck in Berkeley Township, authorities said.
The crash happened at about 12:45 p.m. near Moorage Avenue and Sherman Avenue, according to Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer. Berkeley Township police responded to the intersection following a report of a collision involving a motor vehicle and an electric dirt bike.
Investigators determined that an 11-year-old boy was operating the bike north on Sherman Avenue with an 11-year-old girl riding as a passenger. The dirt bike failed to stop at a posted stop sign and entered the intersection, where it struck the driver’s side door of the westbound pickup truck, prosecutors said.
Girl Pronounced Dead After Berkeley Township Crash
The boy was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune for treatment. Authorities said he was treated for his injuries and released.
The girl suffered more severe injuries and was taken to Community Medical Center in Toms River.
She was pronounced dead as a result of injuries sustained in the crash, according to the prosecutor’s office. Authorities did not release the children’s names.
The driver of the Ford F-250 stayed at the scene following the collision.
“The operator of the Ford F-250 remained at the scene, possessed a valid driver’s license, and showed no signs of impairment,” the prosecutor’s office said.
No charges against the pickup truck driver were announced.
Ocean County Investigators Examine Fatal Dirt Bike Crash
The investigation was conducted by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit-Vehicular Homicide Squad, Berkeley Township Police Department and Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit.
Investigators determined the electric dirt bike entered the intersection after failing to stop at the stop sign on Sherman Avenue, according to the prosecutor’s office.
The collision occurred when the bike struck the driver’s side of the Ford as the pickup traveled west on Moorage Avenue.
The girl killed in the Berkeley Township crash was 11 years old.
She was riding as a passenger on the electric dirt bike and was pronounced dead after being transported to Community Medical Center.
The 11-year-old boy operating the dirt bike survived.
He was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, treated for his injuries and later released.
Investigators said the pickup truck driver showed no signs of impairment.
The driver remained at the crash scene and possessed a valid driver’s license, according to the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office.
