Deadly Southeast DC shooting ends city’s 12-day homicide-free streak under federal crackdown

WASHINGTON, DC — The first homicide in nearly two weeks was reported just after midnight Monday in Southeast, ending a rare 12-day stretch without a killing in the nation’s capital during President Trump’s federally ordered law enforcement surge.

The shooting happened around 12:24 a.m. in the 300 block of Anacostia Road SE. A man was found suffering from a gunshot wound and was rushed to a hospital, where he later died.

The city’s last reported homicide occurred on August 13. The pause in killings came after a federal crackdown began August 11, when Trump authorized expanded federal control in Washington. National Guard troops arrived the following day, with local and federal agencies carrying out mass enforcement efforts across the city.

Since the start of the operation, more than 1,000 arrests have been made and over 100 illegal firearms have been recovered, officials confirmed.
