An unplanned stop for a drink ended with a six-figure FAST PLAY ticket
BALTIMORE, MD – A downtown Baltimore traffic jam sent one driver onto Baltimore Street and into a restaurant she had never visited, where a stop for a drink turned into a $100,000 Maryland Lottery win.
The Baltimore City resident, using the alias “Cat Granny” to remain anonymous, told Maryland Lottery officials that heavy traffic altered her route on Aug. 16.
After ending up on Baltimore Street, she spotted Crazy John’s at 410 East Baltimore Street and stopped because she was thirsty.
“I play Lottery sometimes and I noticed they had Lottery in the back,” Cat Granny told Lottery officials. “I like to get games in places I never been before and I’ve never been to Crazy John’s.”
While inside, she purchased a $10 FAST PLAY Cash Tree ticket along with several scratch-offs.
Cat Granny said the tree imagery on the FAST PLAY game caught her attention because it reminded her of a story about a man who would leave his worries at a tree by rubbing its leaves.
She took the tickets home and checked them later that night.
One of the numbers on her Cash Tree ticket matched a winning number. The prize printed beneath it was $100,000.
“I just couldn’t comprehend it!” she told Lottery officials. “I kept looking at the numbers and looking at the trees and it just wasn’t processing.”
Still unsure of what she was seeing, she showed the ticket to her niece, who confirmed the $100,000 win.
Cat Granny claimed the prize Wednesday. She told Lottery officials she plans to help family members, pay down debt and buy treats and toys for her cats.
Crazy John’s will receive a $1,000 bonus from the Maryland Lottery for selling the winning ticket.
The $10 Cash Tree FAST PLAY game launched in July. Following Cat Granny’s win, 11 $100,000 top prizes remain, along with all six $50,000 second-tier prizes and thousands of other prizes ranging from $10 to $10,000.
