LAKEWOOD, NJ – Lakewood residents are celebrating the completion of a new pedestrian bridge over Lake Carasaljo, aimed at enhancing recreational access to the lake. Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles announced that the bridge spans approximately 800 to 850 feet and is constructed from a low-maintenance plastic commonly used in floating docks. The project, completed by EZ Docks, marks a significant improvement in the area, previously known for its muddy and weed-filled waters which often trapped boats and required police rescues.
Mayor Coles emphasized the strategic placement of the bridge to deter boating in the problematic area, enhancing safety and accessibility. The construction process was brief, lasting only a few months, and the bridge was funded through block grants that also covered other local projects. Notably, no taxpayer money was involved in the financing of this $1 million project.
Patrick Donnelly, the municipal manager of Lakewood, noted the bridge’s heavy usage as a positive outcome, highlighting its role in preventing accidents with a safety fence and soon-to-be-added decorated panels. These enhancements aim to increase safety for children and other users.
The bridge, which prohibits scooters and e-bikes to ensure pedestrian safety, offers benches for sitting or fishing but does not feature any tables. Visitors are advised to wear hats as there is no cover to protect against the sun.
With this new infrastructure, Mayor Coles expressed optimism about increasing recreational opportunities for Lakewood residents. The bridge not only facilitates easier access to Lake Carasaljo but also encourages more people to enjoy the waterfront, fulfilling a long-standing community request.
