WILMINGTON, DE — Delaware State Police are currently investigating an officer-involved shooting that transpired last night in Wilmington. The incident occurred on May 31, around 9:19 p.m., after troopers were called to a residence on Ferris Road for a report of a suicidal man.
Initial findings indicate that two teenagers observed 36-year-old Jonathan Kreiser of Smyrna, Delaware, behaving erratically and waving a gun in the street. Kreiser reportedly expressed a desire to be shot. One of the teens managed to persuade Kreiser to put down the weapon, disarmed it by removing the magazine, and placed both items on the sidewalk before calling 911.
Upon their arrival, troopers engaged Kreiser, who refused to comply with commands to reveal his hidden hand. The situation escalated when Kreiser retrieved the gun and magazine, reloaded, and turned towards a trooper, who then discharged his weapon, striking Kreiser.
Kreiser was subsequently treated at the scene and transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. He remains in stable condition and has been charged with Aggravated Menacing and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony. Kreiser was arraigned and is now held on a $21,000 cash bond.
Further investigation revealed that Kreiser was the subject of a Gold Alert issued earlier that day by the Smyrna Police Department, noting he had taken his brother’s gun and was considered suicidal.
