Stafford County, VA – A South Carolina man is in custody following a series of intentional vehicle crashes on Richmond Highway on July 1.
At approximately 6:05 p.m., First Sergeant D.W. Fetterolf and Deputy X.D. Bates responded to a crash near Richmond Highway and Coachman Circle. A southbound Subaru SUV had intentionally struck the rear of a southbound BMW motorcycle, causing the motorcyclist to be thrown onto the hood of the SUV before falling onto the pavement. The motorcyclist sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
The Subaru driver continued southbound, intentionally striking a Ford F-150 and pushing it toward a guardrail. The F-150 driver was unharmed. First Sergeant M.R. Flick and Sergeant J.D. Hurt observed the Subaru near Courthouse Road and attempted a traffic stop.
The suspect, Rome Washington, 40, of Columbia, South Carolina, refused to stop and increased his speed to over 100 mph, driving recklessly and evading tire deflation attempts.
Sergeant Hurt executed a PIT maneuver near Enon Road, causing the Subaru to spin and flip. Washington was uninjured and taken into custody. He faces charges including attempted murder, DUI, reckless driving, felony eluding, felony hit and run, attempted malicious wounding, vandalism, and multiple traffic violations. Washington is held without bond at the Rappahannock Regional Jail.
