NEWARK, DE — A 32-year-old man was killed early Wednesday morning after being struck by a vehicle while walking on East Chestnut Hill Road, according to Delaware State Police.

The incident occurred at approximately 1:14 a.m. when a 2013 silver Kia Optima, traveling westbound in the left lane of East Chestnut Hill Road near Martindale Drive, struck the pedestrian. Police reported that the man, who was wearing dark-colored clothing, was walking in the vehicle’s path at the time of the collision.

The pedestrian, a New Castle, Delaware, resident, was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have withheld his name pending notification of his family.

The driver of the Kia, a 36-year-old man from Newark, Delaware, was not injured. Two passengers in the vehicle, a 14-year-old and a 17-year-old, were also unharmed.

The roadway was closed for approximately four hours as investigators processed the scene and cleared the area. The circumstances leading to the crash remain under investigation.
