PHILADELPHIA — A Philadelphia man is facing multiple felony charges after a police officer was shot and wounded Wednesday during a violent altercation near Overbrook High School, authorities announced late Wednesday night.

Dachan Seay, 30, has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault, assault of a law enforcement officer, several firearms violations, and related offenses, according to the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office. Prosecutors are seeking $5 million bail and have requested Seay be detained.

The incident began in the afternoon when 19th District officers responded to a large physical fight near the high school in the city’s Overbrook section. As police attempted to break up the fight, Seay allegedly arrived in an SUV and entered the crowd armed with a handgun.

While trying to hide the firearm in his hoodie, the weapon discharged, striking a fire hydrant and ricocheting into an officer’s stomach. Authorities said the officer was wounded but did not specify the extent of the injuries.

Seay attempted to flee to his vehicle but was apprehended at the scene. Police recovered a Ruger handgun believed to have been used in the incident.

DA’s office continues investigation

The shooting occurred during what police described as a chaotic and fast-moving street altercation involving numerous individuals. Officials did not indicate whether Seay was involved in the initial fight before his arrival.

“This remains an ongoing investigation,” the District Attorney’s Office stated, noting that the Victim Services Unit will support the injured officer, affected police personnel, and members of the Overbrook community.

Seay is also charged with two counts of VUFA 6105, a statute pertaining to firearm possession by persons not to possess. Additional charges include reckless endangerment and possession of an instrument of crime.

The name of the injured officer has not been released. Further updates will depend on the progress of the investigation and legal proceedings.
