SALT LAKE CITY, UT — The Salt Lake City Police Department has released new details following a fatal shooting during the “No Kings” demonstration in downtown Salt Lake City on June 14.

Arthur Folasa Ah Loo, 39, was killed during the incident, which occurred around 7:56 p.m. near 151 South State Street. Police believe Ah Loo was an innocent bystander and not the intended target.

The demonstration, which drew an estimated 10,000 participants, was interrupted when gunfire erupted, causing panic as hundreds fled into nearby businesses, garages, and behind barriers. Officers on site quickly secured the area and began life-saving measures on Ah Loo, assisted by SWAT paramedics and community members. Despite their efforts, Ah Loo later died at the hospital.

Shortly after the shooting, officers encountered 24-year-old Arturo Gamboa near 102 South 200 East. Gamboa, who had suffered a gunshot wound, was found dressed in all black with a black mask. Nearby, police recovered an AR-15-style rifle, a gas mask, black clothing, and a backpack.

Peacekeepers intervened before suspect ran toward crowd

According to police, two men identified as peacekeepers for the event witnessed Gamboa acting suspiciously as he moved behind a wall and retrieved the rifle from his backpack. They confronted him, ordering him to drop the weapon.

Witnesses stated that Gamboa instead raised the rifle and ran toward the crowd. One of the peacekeepers fired three rounds, striking Gamboa and accidentally hitting Ah Loo.

Detectives have not determined why Gamboa pulled out the rifle or attempted to run toward the demonstration. After receiving medical treatment, Gamboa was booked into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on a murder charge.

The Salt Lake City Police Department continues to investigate the incident, including reviewing the actions of the peacekeepers. Authorities have asked community members to submit any relevant photos or videos.
