GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, N.J. — Detectives have arrested a 24-year-old man in connection with the fatal shooting of Anthony Sanflippo, 53, in Gloucester Township last week, the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office announced.
Matthew Lucas, of Gloucester Township, was charged July 15 with first-degree murder, as well as second-degree counts of possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and possession of a weapon.
Officers responded to a report of a shooting at the Lakeview Apartment complex on Lower Landing Road around 4:58 p.m. on July 9. Sanflippo was found deceased in the doorway of his apartment with a gunshot wound. A .45 caliber shell casing was recovered at the scene.
During the investigation, police learned the suspect had stolen a vehicle from a witness at the apartment complex and fled. He was described as wearing a black surgical mask, head garment with tassels, and green pants.
On July 13, NYPD officers located the stolen vehicle on West 49th Street in Manhattan. Lucas was arrested nearby on an unrelated charge and found in possession of the vehicle’s key, a .45 caliber handgun, and wearing clothing matching the suspect description.
Ballistics testing confirmed that the shell casing from the Gloucester Township homicide scene matched the handgun recovered from Lucas. Investigators also found green pants with suspected blood inside the stolen vehicle.
Lucas is currently being held at Rikers Island, pending extradition to New Jersey.
