Bronx man extradited to DC in deadly Kentucky Avenue shooting case

WASHINGTON, DC – Nearly a year after a Southeast Washington homicide, police have arrested and extradited a suspect accused of fatally shooting a 23-year-old man on Kentucky Avenue.

The case dates back to October 21, 2024, when officers responded to 16th Street and Kentucky Avenue, Southeast, around 9:45 a.m. for reports of gunfire. They found Jakele Allen of Northeast DC suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene despite efforts by DC Fire and EMS.

Investigators later identified 36-year-old Kareem Thomas of the Bronx, New York, as a suspect. On July 24, 2025, members of the New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force located Thomas in Mount Vernon, New York, and arrested him on a DC Superior Court warrant for Second Degree Murder while Armed.

On Tuesday, Thomas was extradited to Washington, DC, and transported to the Homicide Branch, where he was formally charged.

The Metropolitan Police Department confirmed the investigation is ongoing.
