HACKETTSTOWN, NJ – New Jersey residents looking to embrace the outdoors this fall can cast their lines into a new hobby, as NJDEP Fish & Wildlife’s R3 Fishing Program kicks off a series of beginner-friendly fishing workshops at the Hackettstown State Fish Hatchery and Pequest Natural Resource Education Center.
The state’s First Catch Center at Hackettstown will host two immersive fishing experiences this September, designed for those new to the sport. The Women’s Fishing Workshop will take place on September 6, followed by a Family Fishing Workshop on September 14. Both sessions cover the essentials of fishing, including fish biology, gear selection, casting techniques, knot tying, and fishing regulations. The workshops end with hands-on fishing practice the same day.
Those interested in fly fishing can head to the Pequest Natural Resource Education Center for three specialized classes:
- September 5 – Introduction to Fly Fishing Bootcamp
- September 12 – Fly Casting Basics 101
- September 16 – Intro to Saltwater Fly Tying
Each session is geared toward demystifying fly fishing for beginners and includes hands-on instruction led by experienced anglers.
These programs are part of NJDEP’s effort to increase participation in outdoor recreation and foster a connection between residents and New Jersey’s natural resources.
