Forgetful granddad doubles fortune with $1M Powerball win

Prince George’s County man forgets ticket then wins $1 million in Powerball Double Play

Landover, MD – A retired Prince George’s County man turned forgetfulness into fortune after unknowingly buying the same Powerball Double Play numbers twice and winning a combined $1 million.

The man, who used the nickname Proud Granddad, bought a ticket on August 18 to cover three drawings with the Double Play option. That ticket matched five numbers in the August 20 Double Play drawing, earning $500,000.

When he returned from an out-of-state trip, he discovered he had already purchased the same numbers on August 12 with the Double Play add-on. That second ticket also won $500,000, bringing his total winnings to $1 million.

The winning numbers he used were based on family birth years. Both winning tickets were sold at different retailers: Landover Hills Exxon on Annapolis Road in Landover and A-1 Laundromat on Riverdale Road in Riverdale. Each store will receive a $1,000 bonus from the Maryland Lottery.

The retiree said he and his wife plan to use the prize money to help their children and grandchildren.

The Powerball jackpot has now climbed to an estimated $815 million for the August 27 drawing, with a cash option of $376.9 million.
