SAN JOSÉ, Calif. – A late-night shooting on Chynoweth Avenue left three people dead and a community reeling after gunfire and screams for help rang out just after midnight Tuesday.
Responding officers found an adult woman suffering from gunshot wounds outside a residence. She was rushed to a local hospital but later died from her injuries. Inside the home, police discovered a second woman, pronounced dead at the scene, and a man who was also shot. The man was transported to the hospital but did not survive.
Investigators quickly launched a homicide probe, with assistance from the Real Time Intelligence Center. Within 24 hours, detectives identified Joseph Vicencio as the primary suspect. On Wednesday, specialized police units tracked Vicencio down in San José and took him into custody without incident. He was booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail on murder charges.
The Santa Clara County Office of the Medical Examiner will release the victims’ identities. Authorities said the motive remains under investigation.
The case marks the 19th, 20th, and 21st homicides of the year in San José.
San José Police Chief Paul Joseph commended the swift work of detectives but underscored the devastating toll: “Three innocent lives were taken. This tragedy has affected the families of the victims, the suspect’s family, and our entire San José community.”
Mayor Matt Mahan echoed the sentiment, praising investigators’ speed while pledging justice for the victims’ families. City Manager Jennifer Maguire also offered condolences and thanked police for their response.
The triple killing has shaken the South Bay city, which continues to grapple with rising violent crime.
