Utica police charge 13-year-old with attempted armed robbery in bikejacking

UTICA, N.Y. – A 13-year-old boy is facing an attempted robbery charge after police say he threatened another juvenile with a handgun while trying to steal a bicycle.

The incident occurred Aug. 28 on Square Street, where the victim told officers he was confronted by another juvenile who brandished a gun, racked it, and demanded his bike. The victim refused, escaped on the bicycle, and contacted the Utica Police Department.

Investigators with the Juvenile Aid Unit obtained surveillance video capturing the encounter. With support from the Mohawk Valley Crime Analysis Center, detectives identified the suspect and filed charges.

The 13-year-old was charged with attempted first-degree robbery and issued an appearance ticket returnable to Family Court.
