Severn man’s American dream continues with $50K Powerball Double Play win
SEVERN, MD – A man who came to Maryland after winning a U.S. visa lottery has now scored big in a very different kind of draw — this time pocketing $50,000 in the Powerball Double Play game.
The Severn resident, who immigrated to the U.S. six years ago through the Diversity Visa Program, credited his early luck with inspiring a habit of regularly playing Powerball and Mega Millions. That optimism paid off during the September 20 Double Play drawing, when he matched four of the five white balls and the red Powerball, securing a third-tier prize of $50,000.
Although he didn’t win in the main Powerball drawing that night, the Double Play option on his ticket — which costs an extra $1 — gave him another shot. The lucky ticket was a single quick pick purchased at the Royal Farms store located at 7910 Shipley Homestead Drive in Hanover.
Powerball Double Play drawings are held 30 minutes after each Powerball drawing, offering players an additional chance to win up to $10 million. Tickets for the main game cost $2, and the Double Play add-on raises the price to $3.
The winner has not been publicly identified, but he told lottery officials that if he ever hits a jackpot-level prize, he hopes to use the money to support programs that help children and youth.
For now, the $50,000 win marks another milestone in a journey that started with a different lottery — one that brought him to the United States in the first place.
