Prince George’s County pair matched five numbers as jackpot continued to climb
BELTSVILLE, MD — A Beltsville couple’s decision to buy a Powerball ticket after hearing co-workers talk about soaring jackpots turned into a $50,000 payday after they matched four white balls and the Powerball in the Fourth of July drawing.
The Prince George’s County couple claimed their prize Thursday at Maryland Lottery headquarters in Baltimore.
The husband said he decided to purchase the ticket after overhearing a co-worker mention that both the Mega Millions and Powerball jackpots had climbed to unusually high amounts.
“When the store’s Lottery sign caught his eye, he thought to himself: ‘Why not give it a shot?'”
The winning ticket matched four of the first five numbers drawn, along with the Powerball, earning the couple a third-tier prize of $50,000.
The ticket was purchased at Vet’s Liquors, located at 11620 Baltimore Avenue in Beltsville.
Two days after buying the ticket, the husband checked the Maryland Lottery website and realized they had won.
“When I looked up the prize for matching four of the five numbers and the Powerball, I couldn’t believe it,” he told lottery officials.
Wanting to be certain before sharing the news, he drove to a lottery retailer to verify the ticket.
“When I got home and told her, she started crying,” he said of his wife’s reaction.
The couple told lottery officials they plan to place the winnings into their savings.
The July 4 Powerball drawing featured an estimated annuity jackpot of $396 million. No ticket matched all six numbers, allowing the jackpot to continue growing. The next drawing on Saturday, July 25, carries an estimated annuity jackpot of $600 million, with a cash option of $266.4 million.
