Rabbi assaulted on Bergenfield street as resident rushes to help; suspect in custody

Bergenfield, NJ – A 40-year-old man from Ridgefield Park was arrested after reportedly assaulting a local rabbi on Sussex Road, an attack that left two residents with minor injuries, according to the Bergenfield Police Department. Officials identified the suspect as Jeffrey Zicchinella, who allegedly exited his vehicle and attacked the rabbi during a confrontation late Sunday morning.

Police said a nearby resident intervened to help the victim, resulting in a struggle that caused minor injuries to both the rabbi and the Good Samaritan. Officers quickly arrived at the scene and took Zicchinella into custody without further incident.

Zicchinella has been charged with two counts of simple assault and was remanded to the Bergen County Jail. Authorities said the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office is reviewing the case as the investigation continues.

Preliminary findings indicate the incident appears to be isolated, and officials emphasized there is no ongoing threat to the community. Out of caution, police have ordered extra patrols near residences and synagogues.
