Gunfire erupts on US-13 as moving car targeted in Laurel drive-by shooting
Laurel, DE – A quiet early morning drive turned violent Sunday when shots rang out from one car into another along US-13, sending investigators scrambling to track down a gunman who opened fire from a moving vehicle just outside Laurel.
Delaware State Police said the shooting happened just after 2 a.m. as a blue Toyota Camry traveled northbound in the left lane of US-13 between Delmar and Laurel. Beside it in the right lane, a silver Chrysler sedan pulled up — and without warning, the driver fired several rounds toward the passenger side of the Toyota before speeding off toward Scarborough Lane.
Miraculously, no one was hurt despite the Toyota being struck by bullets. The gunman, described only as a Black male, remains on the run. Investigators have not recovered surveillance footage or any images from the area, and no arrests have been made.
The motive for the shooting remains unclear, and authorities have not said whether the driver or any passengers in the Toyota were targeted. Troopers from Delaware State Police Troop 4 are now asking anyone who may have been traveling on US-13 around that time, or who may have seen the Chrysler before or after the shooting, to come forward.
The highway section where the shooting took place is a frequently traveled route linking several southern Delaware towns, raising concerns about public safety and potential road rage or targeted violence. Detectives are exploring all possible angles, including whether the two vehicles had any prior interaction.
