CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – A wanted man is in custody after leading police on a vehicle and foot pursuit through Albemarle County on Saturday evening.

The chase began around 5:38 p.m. when an officer spotted the suspect driving with improper registration near Seminole Trail and Rio Road.

Authorities say the driver, identified as 58-year-old Jeffrey Wayne Shifflett of Dyke, refused to stop, fleeing northbound before abandoning his vehicle and running into a wooded area.

Pursuit ends after suspect flees vehicle

According to Albemarle County Police, officers attempted a controlled maneuver to end the chase safely as the pursuit entered the Earlysville area. Shifflett exited the moving vehicle and ran, but was apprehended shortly after following a brief foot pursuit.

Multiple prior incidents linked to suspect

Investigators say Shifflett was wanted on outstanding warrants for shoplifting and felony eluding. He is also believed to have fled from law enforcement on two previous occasions, on September 3 and October 13.

Charges and detention

In addition to his existing warrants, Shifflett now faces three counts of felony eluding, three counts of driving without a license, felony property damage, and several traffic violations.

He was transported to the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail, where he is being held without bond.
