UTICA, N.Y. – Police are investigating two separate shootings that occurred over the weekend in Utica, following ShotSpotter alerts that led officers to recover shell casings and a loaded firearm.
The first incident took place Saturday night around 10:25 p.m. on the 900 block of Blandina Street.
The second occurred Sunday on the 1100 block of Dudley Avenue, where police found a 9mm handgun linked to the gunfire.
Key Points
- Police responded to two ShotSpotter alerts on October 25 and 26.
- Twenty-two shell casings were recovered from the Blandina Street scene.
- A loaded 9mm handgun was found in a Dudley Avenue basement during a safety check.
Dozens of rounds fired on Blandina Street
Officers responding to the Blandina Street alert discovered that bullets had struck a home and a vehicle parked in the driveway. Residents reported hearing multiple rounds during the incident. Police recovered 22 spent shell casings at the scene, consistent with the ShotSpotter detection.
No injuries were reported, though property damage was confirmed inside the residence and to the vehicle.
Gun recovered after Dudley Avenue alert
The following day, police responded to another ShotSpotter alert from the 1100 block of Dudley Avenue. When officers arrived, they found two shell casings outside and an open basement door at a nearby residence.
During a safety search, officers discovered a loaded 9mm handgun resting on top of a dryer. The rounds inside matched the type of casings found outside the home.
Police continue to investigate both incidents
The Utica Police Department said the ownership of the recovered firearm and any connection between the two incidents remain under investigation. Detectives are asking anyone with information to contact the Utica Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division.
