Akron, OH – A coordinated weekend operation targeting illegal dirt bike and ATV riders led to multiple arrests after police said stunt riders turned city streets into danger zones.

Authorities said the joint effort was launched in response to a surge of public complaints about reckless riders disrupting neighborhoods in the Ellet and Derby Downs areas.

The Akron Police Department worked alongside the Summit County Sheriff’s Office, Ohio State Highway Patrol, and Springfield Police Department to intercept what officials described as a large, planned gathering of street riders.

Key Points

  • Multiple arrests were made after a planned stunt-riding event in Akron’s Ellet and Derby Downs neighborhoods.
  • Suspects, ages 15 to 33, face charges including street racing, reckless operation, and resisting arrest.
  • Police say social media photos were used to identify key offenders.

Coordinated operation targets stunt riders

Police said the weekend operation was organized after months of mounting community frustration over loud, speeding dirt bikes and four-wheelers tearing through residential streets. Investigators used social media posts to pinpoint individuals promoting and attending the event.

When officers moved in, several riders attempted to flee, prompting charges of willful flight and failure to comply with police signals. Others were taken into custody without incident.

Riders face multiple charges

Officials said those arrested ranged in age from 15 to 33 and face a list of charges, including street racing, reckless operation, obstructing official business, resisting arrest, and driving without a valid license. Numerous traffic citations were also issued.

Police vow continued enforcement

Akron Police credited their Patrol Division, Traffic Unit, Anti-Violence Bureau, and SWAT team for their roles in safely managing the enforcement action. Department leaders said similar operations will continue throughout the city to curb illegal street riding and restore safety to residential areas.
