Jersey City man charged with felony murder in deadly stabbing near Maxwell Street
Jersey City, NJ – A 61-year-old man has been charged with felony murder and robbery following the fatal stabbing of a 26-year-old man in Jersey City last Friday afternoon, according to the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office.
Roberto Camacho, of Jersey City, was charged on Tuesday with Murder, Felony Murder during the commission of a robbery, and Robbery. Prosecutors say Camacho has been held at the Hudson County Correctional Facility since the day of the incident.
The deadly stabbing occurred just after 12:20 p.m. on October 24 near the intersection of Jersey Avenue, 1st Street, and Maxwell Street. Officers responded to the scene after receiving reports of a stabbing and found Joan Segovia, 26, suffering from a stab wound to the abdomen. He was rushed to Jersey City Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly after 1 p.m.
An autopsy conducted by the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office determined that Segovia died from a stab wound to the chest, and ruled the manner of death as homicide.
Camacho was formally charged while in custody on Tuesday, October 28. Authorities have not released details on what led up to the stabbing, though the inclusion of felony murder and robbery charges suggests a violent encounter connected to an attempted or completed theft.
The investigation was led by the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit in coordination with the Jersey City Police Department. The case remains active.
All charges are accusations, and Camacho is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
