NEWARK, NJ – A Newark man has been convicted of sexually assaulting an underage family member after a three-day trial in Essex County Superior Court, prosecutors announced Wednesday.
The jury found 42-year-old Javier Freire-Ramos guilty on multiple counts, including aggravated sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child.
The verdict was delivered Monday following testimony detailing repeated abuse that began when the victim was just 11 years old.

Jury convicts after three-day trial
According to Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens II, the jury returned its verdict on November 10 after deliberating on evidence presented by Assistant Prosecutors Logan Teisch and Zhen Liu. The case was tried before the Honorable Christopher S. Romanyshyn, J.S.C. Prosecutors proved that Freire-Ramos repeatedly abused the young victim over several months.

Assistant Prosecutor Teisch said the defendant “had an obligation to love and protect the victim” but instead violated that trust. Liu praised the child’s bravery in testifying about the abuse, noting that her testimony was instrumental in securing the conviction.
Sentencing set for February
Freire-Ramos is scheduled to be sentenced on February 6, 2026, and faces a potential sentence of 25 years to life in New Jersey State Prison. Officials from the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office thanked the Newark Police Division for their collaboration in the investigation.
