New Egypt Speedway to stay closed for 2026 as owner seeks buyer
NEW EGYPT, NJ – The roar of engines at New Egypt Speedway will fall silent next year, as the track’s longtime owner announced the facility will not open for the 2026 racing season.
After nearly two decades running the central New Jersey dirt track, owner Fred Vahlsing confirmed he has no plans to operate the speedway in the coming year.
Vahlsing, who has overseen the 7/16-mile D-shaped oval since 2007, said he remains open to selling the venue or allowing another party to manage racing operations moving forward.
The closure marks a pause for one of the region’s most recognized motorsports venues, affectionately known as “Thunder in the Pines.”
Owner cites opportunity for new leadership
In a statement, Vahlsing emphasized that while the racetrack will not host events in 2026, the property remains active for other purposes. Truck parking and leasing options will continue on-site, and VP Racing Fuels will remain available for sale.
Vahlsing also confirmed that the South Jersey Quarter Midget Association will keep operating its smaller track on the grounds, ensuring youth racing will continue despite the main speedway’s closure.
End of an era for New Jersey racing fans
For decades, New Egypt Speedway has been a staple of the Garden State’s short-track racing scene, drawing fans from across the Mid-Atlantic for modifieds, sportsman, and sprint car events. Its closure for the upcoming season underscores the financial and operational challenges facing independently owned race facilities nationwide.
Racers and fans are hoping a new buyer or promoter will emerge in time to revive the track’s weekly schedule in 2027.
